Maybe you’ve heard the term Comic Con and you’re not exactly sure what it stands for. Maybe you’re a die-hard fan whose cosplay has been ready for months. In any case, you are going to love San Diego’s 2019 Comic Con!

What’s a Comic Con?

Comic Con stands for Comic Convention. The first one, called the Minicon, was put in place by a group of comic, movie and science-fiction fans in 1970. The event had a double aim: increase awareness about comics and raise funds for a larger convention. The success of the first one led to a 3-day convention in August 1970.

The second event, called the San Diego’s Golden State Comic Con, created the model of the Comic Con as we know them today. The event featured film screenings, a dealer’s room, programs and panels and special guests such as Ray Bradbury, Jack Kirby and A. E. Van Vogt.

Since the 70s, the Comic Con phaenomena has grown a lot. Not only has the name of the San Diego Convention changed a few time, becoming in 1995 the Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC), the event has also grown a lot in popularity. In 2018, over 130 000 people attended the event.

This popularity is partly due to the connection between the SDCC and Hollywood. It’s at the Comic-con, for example, that Robert Downey Junior announced the cast of The Avengers in 2010 – 2 years before the movies hit the screen. Many other movies stars, tv-shows actors, producers, etc., take part in the event, much to the fans’ delight.

What can we expect this year?

This year celebrates the 50th San Diego’s Comic Con and it promises to be incredible. The fans favourite production all signed up to celebrate the events big anniversary.

The convention will be kicking off with a Preview Night on July 17. If it’s anything like last year, there will plenty of events taking place everywhere around San Diego. The Scare Diego, organized by Warner Bros and New Line will be taking place on the first night and should be a lot of fun.

On the other days, you will be able to stroll through the festival-like convention and meet some of your favourite stars.

Games of Thrones

SDCC is coming! And so are your favourite Westerosi. The Game of Thrones’ key cast will be packed in Hall H for the last time on Friday 19th at 5:30PM. Your beloved characters, including Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Arya (Maisie Williams), and the series creator and showrunner David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will all be waiting for you.

Many other HBO production will be present such as Westworld, His Dark Materials, Watchmen…

Marvel Agents of SHIELD

This year, Disney and Marvel will be presenting one of their big success at Hall H: Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The TV-show, who centers around the adventures of special agents from S.H.I.E.L.D., just finished running its sixth season and just announced its renewal for a seventh season. The show is on the lineup of the SDCC for the first time on the 18th of July, from 3:30 to 4:30PM.

The panel will include the show’s executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, Jeff Bell, and Jeph Loeb. Many of the show’s cast member will also be present: Ming-Na Wen, Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennet, Iain de Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Jeff Ward and Natalia Cordova-Buckley.

Star Wars

Are you missing your intergalactic friend? Last year, Disney chose not to participate in SDCC, leaving thousands of fans hanging.

This year, however, they will be participating in the event and as we can see from the exhibit map, they will be holding two booths. There you will be able to find the publishers of Star Wars book, novels & audio books and books aimed at children, and a lot more of Star Wars merchandise.

While we are talking…

While we are talking about Star Wars merchandise, let’s mention that the San Diego Comic Con is always the best place to find the weirdest, strangest and downright awesomest merchandise.

There you will be able to find incredible objects such as the Ant Man Ant Farm, the Avengers Waffle Iron, the Marvel Chess Collection, the C3-PO Tape Dispenser and my personal favourite, the ChewBagPack. You will also be able to find many casino games about your favourite movies and TV-shows. From the Game of Thrones slot machines to Planet of the Apes, and even the newest video slot Lara Croft Temples and Tombs, you will find plentiful occasions to try your hands at the awesome new casino games.

There you go. I bet you can’t wait for the Comic Con to start. May the force be with you.
