Social media has affected every facet of our lives. From how we share life-changing news to how we make life-changing plans.

People are sharing every part of their lives online, from concept to completion. Everything from holidays, job searches, and engagements, to tying the knot can be found on the web. As is only human, people also tend to share the positive side of their lives with the public. The new biggest trend is to post about your picture-perfect wedding, allowing your friends on social media to get a glimpse into your perfect life, and being able to bask in the glory of your big day with you. Few will post anything other than the highlights, trying to create an image of perfection, to set a standard against which others will measure themselves.

The result is that there is a running competition that never ends, where winners only hold their title from one ‘I Do’ to the next. Weddings have been transformed from marked occasions, to public displays of happiness measured in $ signs, and this has created a booming industry where one couple tries to outdo the next. However, this all comes at a cost.

The Planning Process

Planning a wedding used to involve endless amounts of glue sticks, paper cuts, and scrapbooks. Yellow post-its were the bride’s best friend, and the amount of money spent on bridal magazines could rival most dresses. Planning was done after work and after family time, but today, newly engaged couples admit to planning all through the day. This all-consuming hunt includes the search for vendors on social media to searching for comparative ideas on Pinterest.

Much to the delight of brides- (and grooms-) to-be, today’s research tools have made it easier than ever to look for inspiration. A simple browse on Pinterest in the ‘Mr and Mrs’ category comes up with almost endless results. Wedding boards can be created, vendors found, flowers imported. With access to so much information and inspiration, it has opened a whole new world for every couple.

The Rising Costs of Weddings

Before the days of social media, most couples used local suppliers, whatever flowers their florist could find, and a local venue. Destination weddings and imported foie gras was reserved for the rich and shameless.

Today, people can choose to get married in exotic locations, find and import any flower they choose, and have any meal they desire served, no matter how exotic. The effect of social media on the rising cost of weddings is clear, and it seems like future Mr and Mrs’ need to win big playing at online casino games before they set about planning their wedding, as the cost is rising with every Instagram post!

Social media also gives couples a taste of every wedding their friends have attended. It creates a false sense of perfection, and everyone wants their special day to be perfect too. New ideas are offered, comparisons made, and each new addition adds another dollar to the bottom line. Every bride and groom wants their friends to publicize just how wonderful their special day was, and will go to great lengths to make it Pinterest or Instagram worthy.

A Public Affair

Couples are no longer planning their dream weddings for themselves; they are planning for Instagram or Facebook. Their perfect day will be up on the Internet before the end of their first kiss; and it needs to be Instagrammable & enviable.

Instant posts by guests create an additional pressure to add items that are perceived to be important by others. If your high school nemesis arrived in a Rolls Royce, you need to arrive to the ceremony on your big day in a vintage Bentley. These items not only add to costs, but also lead to couples often missing the important part of what they are doing, which is vowing to be you’re your special someone forever.

And forever is a long time, especially if you put more thought into your shoes than your spouse!
