Pai Gow Poker Basics

What’s better than playing 2 popular casino games? Playing a blend of both of them, of course! With elements of Poker and Pai Gow, a Chinese domino game, that’s just what Pai Gow does. Read about the game right here.

Pai Gow Essentials

Every player is dealt 7 cards that are divided into a High Hand of 5 cards and a Low Hand of 2. When you play online with us you’ll be playing against the Dealer alone, while if you ever play offline up to 7 players can participate.

The first thing you’ll do is lay a bet, and then you and the Dealer will both be given 7 cards. Since Pai Gow Poker uses the standard deck plus the Joker, this means that 39 cards are left untouched. Once you’re looking at your 7 cards, you can decide how you want to divide them into Low and High hands.

The High Hand will always be worth more than the Low, and the Joker serves as a limited Wild Card that can be used to complete a Flush, a Straight or a Straight Flush. If the cards in your hand mean this rule doesn’t apply to you and you have a Joker, it’s played as an Ace.

The usual Poker hand rankings are used, except that the highest-ranked hand is the 4 Aces and the Joker, known as 5 Aces, and the second-highest is a Straight Flush called the Wheel and made up of the A2345 cards. After you’ve set your cards, your hand and the Dealer’s are both revealed. High Hand is compared against High Hand, while Low Hand is compared against Low Hand.

If your Higher and Lower Hands both win against the Dealer’s the round is yours, and if both lose then you forfeit the round. If one of your hands win and one loses or ties with the Dealer’s a Push occurs, and if both your hands tie or lose then you’ll lose your bet.
