For most of us, our daily commute to work involves getting in our car, sitting in traffic or waiting for the bus to arrive. For others it might be a combination of walking, catching the train, taking a bus or cycling for 20 minutes to arrive at our office safe and sound.

Even though we can enjoy playing online casino games if we have to catch a bus, or can read while waiting to get to our destination, with the rapid growth of urbanisation, the cluttering of roadways in cities is set to get worse each year. As such, alternative methods of transportation are needed to get a growing population to their place of work.

The Future of Transportation

While some companies have become proactive allowing for flexi-hours and work-at-home models, this is not a viable option for all entities. This is especially true for jobs where workers perform vital tasks during the day that help the economy run. This includes hospital staff, shop workers, safety workers, construction workers or anyone who has to be on-site in order to do their job.

Getting everyone to work on time has never been more important as it is today. A major road accident or public transport strike can have massive implications on the economy, with every hour that people are not able to do their jobs costing money. As such, companies have been looking at new technology to ensure their workers get to the office on time.

Drone Technology

You may have heard of drone technology before, as these multi-propelled aerial devices are all the rage at the moment, with drone racing, drone photography and even drone shopping become popular in cities all around the globe. The functionality of drones has come a long way since the first models came onto the market. At local festivals, people have been able to order a can of beer on their smartphone and have drone drop their beverage into their lap within a few minutes.

Now, scientists are using the same technology to create human transport devices that can pick you up from your home and take you to work. If this sounds more like science fiction, you better think again. Working prototypes of human-carrying drones are already being tested and refined. We know that anyone who has ever been stuck in traffic for a few hours has dreamed of having a jet pack and flying off to work in a matter of minutes. Now, this might just be possible sooner than you think!

Expanding on the Idea

There are actually a number of companies that are turning this science fiction concept into fact. One such drone prototype has been hailed as the next major breakthrough in personal transportation. According to a former pilot, learning to fly the drone is easier than learning to ride a bicycle. If this type of technology becomes affordable and commonplace, it would create a transportation revolution.

Instead of taking the car to the shops, the cinema or the casino, we could hop into our own private drone and jet off as the crow flies to our destination.

Alternative Transport Options

While human drone technology is still in the testing phase, other innovations in personal transportation have emerged in cities. Electric scooters can already be seen on the streets around the world. Linked into their power station, the scooters are activated with a simple scanning of the QR code from your mobile app. The app then debits your account and allows you to zip off to your destination where you clip your scooter into a nearby station.

In other cities, self-driving busses are being tested on popular routes. The busses work on a timed schedule and travel at safe speeds, without the need of a driver. These technologies combined with personal powered vehicles like hover boards and scooters could see a massive shift in how we commute in the near future, and could put an end to the rush hour blues, too.
